Lake Cumberland/ Somerset enthusiasts and adventure seekers!
Somerset has partnered with 10 other cities to develop the Kentucky Capitals Quest! This thrilling adventure invites explorers to discover the rich history and hidden gems of Kentucky’s capital cities, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be included in this unique journey.
What is the Kentucky Capitals Quest?
The Kentucky Capitals Quest is an engaging, statewide adventure designed to encourage residents and visitors alike to explore the historical, unique capitals of Kentucky. Participants can collect stamps on their quest passports as they visit each capital city, learning fascinating facts and enjoying the diverse beauty of our state.
Why Somerset?
Somerset was the birthplace of the houseboat, when Jim Sharpe built and sold his first houseboat in 1953. Sharpe built his first houseboat, which was a 10- by 24-foot steel bottom with scow bow, a few years later he started building boats 11 by 32 feet and then by 1969 he was building 12- by 40-foot boat.
Beginning in the 1990s, Kentucky’s houseboat industry entered into international markets exporting houseboats made in Kentucky around the globe; and since then, thousands of houseboats have been built around the shores of Lake Cumberland, but Kentuckians, like the thousands of visitors who migrate to Kentucky every year, enjoy houseboating as a recreational opportunity.
in 2012, Houseboat Magazine reported that the Lake Cumberland region of Kentucky produced
more houseboats than any other area in the nation.
In 2014, the Kentucky Governor and Legislature declared Kentucky/Lake Cumberland as the Houseboat Capital of the World.
